As fashion is near and dear to my heart, let’s start with one of my favorite jewelry stores. Key West Local Luxe is where I met owner, artist, designer, and full-on fashionista Barb Grob.

Barb’s first ventures were as an owner of several galleries representing hundreds of local Key West artists. After working as a fine art gallery owner and curator for over two decades, and being an artist and muralist herself, Barb decided to rekindle the creative spark of her first childhood passion by creating beautiful jewelry from fine jewels and gemstones.

The day I visited, Local Luxe was closed, but Barb agreed to make time to meet with me at the shop. This premier destination for luxury shopping showcases authentic gem, stone, and pearl jewelry designs found nowhere else on the island.

I loved the rare paua shell from New Zealand, the stunningly large Tahitian pearls, lustrous opals, and richly colored Mediterranean coral. Visitors will also find plenty of resort wear available throughout the surrounding area.

The shop is creatively merchandised by color, price, and category. Prices range from $10 to $10,000, with a strong selection of beautiful pieces priced between $100 and $500.

Barb creates many of the unique designs herself but also collaborates with designers from around the world, especially artisans from Turkey and Greece. Her collection reflects both global craftsmanship and the colorful spirit of Key West.

What makes Local Luxe especially unique is Barb’s weekly Pretty Party Shopping Show on Facebook Live at 6 PM EST. Each week she curates new designs, discounted pieces, and holiday-themed collections for viewers and VIP customers.

On Wednesday evenings, VIP customers can preview pieces and place orders before Thursday’s broadcast. The live show also features fit videos and real-time interaction with the designer herself.

Key West Island Books

Right next door is Key West Island Books, home to a remarkable collection of new and used books, many written by local authors. It is also the oldest bookstore in Key West.

Just across Fleming Street, you will find Amanda Johnson Gallery & Studio. Amanda is originally from Chicago and studied art at the Chicago Art Institute before finding her true place in Key West more than 12 years ago.

Her work perfectly reflects why Key West is a hub for talented local artists. Amanda specializes in palette painting with impressionist styles featuring flora, fauna, sea life, and sunsets illuminated by the brilliance of tropical light.

Amanda offers both original oil paintings and giclee prints. Each canvas is stretched over a wood frame, varnished, UV coated, and hand embellished with palette knife and brushwork details, ensuring no two prints are exactly alike.

As many visitors know, Key West is famous for its free-roaming roosters and chickens. Amanda developed a passion for these birds, and much of her artwork reflects that inspiration.

The Roost

Nestled among the quaint local shops on Fleming Street is The Roost, a stylish local-favorite cocktail bar. The bartender is one of the best mixologists I encountered during my time in Key West.

All ingredients are fresh and carefully mixed with your favorite spirits to create exceptional craft cocktails. If you have extra time, be sure to visit their sister bar, Mary Ellen’s, for a fabulous frozen Irish whiskey drink blended with Oreo cookies.

I was lucky enough to discover this colorful gallery on my own along Duval Street. Owned by artists Adam Russell and Kelly Lever, Key West Pottery showcases a local perspective of coastal life through tropical modern décor and handcrafted artwork.

The gallery’s authentic works range from small clay vessels to colorful home décor pieces. Visitors will also find modern paintings and a variety of contemporary prints suitable for every collector’s shelf and wall.

Featuring gifts and unique artwork made by more than 25 local artists, Sacred Space Gallery was created by four artists sharing studio space. The gallery specializes in artwork created by women throughout the Florida Keys.

Visitors will find a wide variety of one-of-a-kind Key West gifts perfect for friends, family, or personal keepsakes. The creative atmosphere makes it a memorable stop for art lovers exploring the island.

One Fish Two Fish Studio

As visitors pass by this sunlit gallery, they will often find artist Sean Callahan at work. Sean is one of the most talented local artists in the area and has spent more than 30 years mastering watercolor techniques.

His One Fish Two Fish Studio features original artwork created in watercolor, acrylics, and other mixed mediums. He also creates unique coconut bouquets and mobiles crafted from Poinciana pods, adding an unmistakably tropical touch to the gallery.

Key West First Legal Rum Distillery

On my second spirited stop, I toured the distillery and learned about the artistry of how rum is crafted. First Legal Rum was chosen as the winner of the Best American Craft Rum in 2023.

While visiting, be sure to look for nearby Key lime products, and consider a visit to the nearby staple, Kermit's Key Lime Shop. The area blends island shopping with classic Key West tastes and traditions.

Island Boy Arts

Artist Rafael Medina is a self-taught artist whose work is often described as abstract expressionism. His paintings focus on colorful sea life, coral, and the dancing tropical light surrounding them.

When I visited Rafael in his Island Boy Arts studio, he was working on a large painting of a beautiful swordfish. Although his canvas pieces are stunning, Rafael also paints on wood, adding another layer of texture and dimension to his creations. His vibrant style perfectly reflects the energy of island living.

Backyards of Key West

Just steps from Island Boy Arts, I met artist Mark Baratto. His work features iconic houses, sunny beaches, and the famous Key West chickens seen throughout the island. Each design is available as canvas prints or hand-printed apparel.

In addition, Mark hosts a weekly Backyards of Key West Podcast during which he interviews local event planners, artists, entertainers, restaurateurs, chefs and many more fascinating guests with heartfelt stories about life in the city.

Before ending my day, I discovered Sail Bags, which is a shop that’s specializing in salvaging used boat sails and transforming them into functional décor and accessories. The designer cleans, disassembles, and re-sews each sail into sturdy and fashionable pieces directly inside the store.

The result is a creative collection of nautical accessories that reflects both sustainability and coastal craftsmanship. It was the perfect final stop for my second day of Key West shopping.
